This was the first proper video we ever made, back in September 2010, just weeks before leaving for our Europe adventure. The footage is a mixture of home movie stuff and a few specific scenes intentionally filmed for the video. It starts with some home movie footage of me in the train station in London about to return to Edinburgh after a short visit there in March 2009.
There is then some footage from a Barcelona trip in 2007 and Berlin in 2008. The footage of me singing and playing was not actually intended for the video, it was an acoustic performance of the song from 2006. The "crazy dancing" scenes were also not intended for this video but were taken during a time I was regularly doing spontaneous dancing and movement in our flat in Edinburgh around 2008. This was part of my kundalini awakening, where these spontaneous movements became part of my daily life - a way for the increased amounts of energy to flow and open up within my body. I had no training whatsoever in this, I did nothing to make it happen, it all just spontaneously began occuring after my awakening in 2007 and I simply allowed it. One day we filmed it and when it came time to make this video, it seemed to fit. I questioned whether it was a good idea to put it in because people might not understand what was going on but I wanted to be honest, and it is part of my life. I also knew the right people would see it and understand.
My mum appears at 0:30 and we felt it apt to put in the little "peace on earth" part since it was from some home movie footage taken from either Christmas 2005 or 2006, I can't remember. She died in March 2007 and it is some of the last footage we have of her. Messing around, one of us asked her "what is your message to the world?" and that's what she replied with. The family cat, Jerry, makes an appearance. He died later the same year as my mum - a time when everything was falling apart as I knew it. My brother, Dad and Gran also make an appearance as does Kate's parents.
Around 2:27 there is footage of me taken at the High Street in Edinburgh, which was intentional. We went out one day in September 2010 and just filmed stuff specifically for the video. Interestingly, that very spot where I am standing, outside St. Giles church, is one of the places I would busk almost 10 years later.
The footage of us playing football is just home movie stuff from a period earlier in 2010 when we used to regularly have a kick about in The Meadows.
I seem to remember the general vibe of the video we were going for was to kind of represent the various people in our lives, some who had gone and some still with us, because we were about to set off on this Europe adventure not knowing where it'd take us. The song is kind of a travel song, a journey through life.
